Chile is divided into 15 regions About one third of Chile’s residents live in Santiago, leaving vast expanses of unspoiled wilderness for those seeking a true escape.

Language: Spanish is the official language. English is widely spoken in tourist areas.

Border Countries: Peru, Bolivia, Argentina

Visas: A visa is not required by UK citizens for tourist stays of up to 3 months.

Time Difference: Chile observes Daylight Savings Time October to March GMT-3. GMT-4 the rest of the year Easter Island GMT -6

Voltage Requirements: 220 volts. Electrical sockets have two openings for tubular pins, so take a plug adapter.

Currency: Chilean Peso.

Money Exchange: Banks and money exchanges, “Casa de Cambio” Most efficient way to carry and change money is with a debit or ATM card. ATM machines normally give better rates at no commission. Banks open Monday to Friday 9am to 2pm, closed on Saturday and Sunday All major credit cards are widely accepted.

Tipping: Customary in Chilean restaurants at a rate of 10%. Hotel tipping is discretionary, and tipping cab drivers is uncommon.

Petrol Costs:One litre of petrol 40p, moderate meal £3, one roll of camera film £3, four-mile taxi ride £2, a beer - 50p. All costs will vary.

Vaccinations: Chile presents few serious hazards and you do not need any vaccinations to enter the country but it may be advisable to get, typhoid and hepatitis. International Certificate of Vaccination for Yellow Fever is required if arriving from an infected area within 5 days.

Emergencies: For a police emergency call 133, or to request an ambulance dial 131. Police officers wear olive green uniforms.
